Busbar Trunking Systems: A Compact Solution for Power Distribution A busbar trunking system (BTS) is a modular, enclosed way to distribute electrical power inside buildings and industrial plants. It uses conductive bars (busbars) housed in insulated enclosures to carry large currents safely and efficiently, replacing long runs of individual cables in many installations. How it works - Power is fed from a main switchboard into a trunking run. - The busbars inside the enclosure carry the current from one point to another along the length of the installation. - Along the trunking run, taps or socket-outlet connections can be added at convenient locations. - End caps, joints, and protective housings seal and isolate each section, helping to keep heat and dust out and to improve safety. Key components - Busbars: solid copper or aluminum bars that carry the current. - Enclosure: an insulated, fire-rated housing that contains the busbars and joints. - Jointing and tap-off connections: allow expansion and the addition of outlets or distribution points. - End caps and covers: provide protection and finish. - Protection devices: circuit breakers or fuses integrated at distribution points. - Accessories: supports, mounting rails, and cooling or ventilation features as needed. Types and ratings - Low-voltage BTS: the most common variant for commercial buildings and light industry, typically used with voltages up to around 1 kV. - Medium-voltage BTS: used in some industrial settings and larger installations where higher voltage distribution is required. - Materials and configurations vary (aluminum vs copper busbars, enclosed vs semi-enclosed designs) to suit space, thermal, and fire-safety requirements. - Enclosures come with different IP ratings and temperature ratings to fit indoor or outdoor, cleanroom, or hazardous environments. Advantages - Faster installation: modular, prefabricated sections reduce on-site wiring time. - Space savings: compact, enclosed system reduces cable clutter and frees usable space. - Safety and reliability: enclosed buses limit exposure to live conductors and help control heat and dust; reduced risk of accidental contact. - Easy expansion: additional taps or feeder points can be added with minimal disruption. - Lower impedance path: efficient current flow and better short-circuit handling, improving protection performance. Applications - Office buildings, shopping centers, data centers, hospitals, and hotels. - Factories, manufacturing plants, and industrial facilities with high or variable power needs. - Airports, logistics centers, and large commercial complexes. - Any installation where dense, scalable power distribution is advantageous and cable routes are constrained. Design and installation considerations - Current rating and short-circuit withstand: ensure the BTS is sized for peak loads and protection coordination. - Thermal management: adequate ventilation or cooling to handle heat rise in the enclosure. - Environment: IP rating, fire safety requirements, and materials compatible with the building environment. - Accessibility: layout should allow easy access for maintenance and fault finding. - Standards: design and installation should comply with relevant standards (for example, IEC/EN 61439 families, and local electrical codes). Maintenance and inspection - Regular checks of enclosure integrity, joint connections, and protective devices. - Thermal imaging or infrared checks to spot hotspots. - Visual inspection for signs of corrosion, moisture ingress, or insulation wear. In short, busbar trunking systems offer a clean, scalable, and efficient way to distribute electrical power in modern buildings and factories. They’re especially valuable where space is tight, installations must be fast, and future expansion is likely.
