DX Split System: A Compact Solution for Climate Control A direct expansion (DX) split system is a popular choice for cooling and heating small to medium spaces. The term "split" means the system’s components are divided between two units: an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser, connected by refrigerant lines. This setup keeps the noisy compressor outside while delivering conditioned air inside. How it works In cooling mode, the indoor unit’s evaporator coil absorbs heat from the room air as the refrigerant inside the coil changes from liquid to gas. The refrigerant then travels to the outdoor unit, where the compressor pressurizes it and releases the absorbed heat to outdoors. The refrigerant returns to the indoor coil to repeat the cycle. In many systems, a reversing valve enables heating as well, turning the DX split into a heat pump for year-round comfort. Sophisticated versions use an inverter compressor to adjust cooling or heating output smoothly and efficiently. Key components - Outdoor condenser unit: houses the compressor, condenser coil, and fan. - Indoor air handler: contains the evaporator coil and blower to distribute conditioned air. - Refrigerant lines: copper tubes that carry the refrigerant between units. - Thermostat or control system: manages temperature and system operation. - Optional inverter/compressor tech: improves efficiency and maintains steady comfort.
