Process of Sewage Treatment The sewage treatment process typically involves several stages: 1. **Preliminary Treatment**: This initial stage involves the removal of large solids and debris from the sewage. Screens and grit chambers are used to filter out items like plastics, rags, and sand. 2. **Primary Treatment**: In this stage, the sewage is allowed to settle in large tanks, where heavier solids sink to the bottom, forming sludge, while lighter materials float to the top and are skimmed off. This process reduces the overall solid content of the sewage. 3. **Secondary Treatment**: This is a biological process where microorganisms are used to break down organic matter in the sewage. Common methods include activated sludge systems, trickling filters, and bio-towers. This stage significantly reduces the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of the wastewater. 4. **Tertiary Treatment**: This advanced treatment stage further polishes the effluent, removing remaining contaminants, nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorus), and pathogens. Techniques may include filtration, chemical treatment, and disinfection (often using chlorine or ultraviolet light). 5. **Sludge Treatment**: The sludge collected from primary and secondary treatment is further processed to reduce its volume and stabilize it. This can involve anaerobic digestion, composting, or incineration. Importance of STPs Sewage Treatment Plants play a crucial role in protecting public health and the environment. By treating sewage, STPs help prevent water pollution, protect aquatic ecosystems, and ensure that water bodies remain safe for recreational and drinking purposes.
